A Systematic and Explicit Approach

Monett R-1 provides systematic and explicit phonics instruction, beginning with the alphabetic principle in Kindergarten and progressing to multisyllabic word reading in Grade 3.

A systematic approach means that letter-sound relationships are taught in an organized and logical sequence. An explicit approach means that instruction provides teachers with precise directions for teaching those letter-sound relationships.

To help accomplish this, teachers utilize the state approved Benchmark Advance Phonics program, written by Wiley Blevins, for Tier I instruction. 

Monett R-1 teachers provide opportunities for students to apply what they are learning about letters and sounds to the reading of words, sentences, and stories. A systematic and explicit approach is shown to improve children's word recognition, spelling, and reading comprehension.

Star Reading Assessment

Star Reading (and Star Early Literacy in K-1) is a benchmark assessment, given up to five times a year to monitor student progress. Teachers and staff use this assessment data to identify student strengths and areas of need, guide classroom instruction, and determine if additional support or intervention is necessary. Star results help educators make informed decisions about Reading Success Plans, small group instruction, and targeted interventions. 

Star assessments are one of several tools used to measure student learning and growth. When combined with classroom performance, teacher observations, and other assessments, Star data helps ensure that every student receives the support needed to become a confident and successful reader.

Reading Success Plans

Reading Success Plans are individual student support plans for students who have been identified as at-risk in one area of foundational reading.

• Comprehension

These plans are written and implemented in accordance with Missouri State Law. Parents or guardians of students who qualify for a Reading Success Plan (RSP) are notified of this plan and are also sent periodic reports showcasing their student's progress.

Title I Services

Monett R-1 School District receives federal money for free and reduced lunch enrollment numbers. The money is used to improve academic achievement in reading and math. 

Title I funds are used to hire Title I teachers, instructional coaches, instructional paraprofessionals, interpreters, parent educators, improve curriculum, enhance parent involvement, and extend learning time for students who need extra help. 

These opportunities are provided to elementary students throughout the Monett R-1 school district. Students who qualify for an RSP may be provided their targeted intervention by a Title I teacher or paraprofessional. This instruction reinforces the systematic approach that was started through Tier I instruction. During intervention (Tier II or Tier III), students receive additional systematic and explicit reading instruction based on their specific needs.
